"OPTIMIZING KIDNEY CARE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC ERA AND BEYOND"

Nephrology Society of Tanzania (NESOT) is keen in improving care of patients with kidney diseases in Tanzania. The theme for the 7th scientific conference is optimizing kidney care in the era of COVID-19, highlighting the challenges facing the health system for provision of care with emergence of this global pandemic. COVID-19 pandemic has had a toll on the improved kidney care provision, which include renal replacement therapy in the form of haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation. NESOT participated in the government efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic through its contribution in the preparation of the national guideline for care of COVID-19 in Tanzania, NESOT prepared the section of kidney care particularly for haemodialysis patients.
Tanzania is among countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with a huge burden of no-communicable diseases including kidney diseases. The prevalence of CKD in Tanzania is ranging between 7 and 15% there is limited data on the burden of acute kidney injury and diseases in Tanzania, but there evolving data to show high burden of this condition.
The challenge now is to improve access of these services by advocating for expansion of services to cover all zones of the country. In line with services for patients with established kidney diseases it is important to improve primary prevention of kidney diseases and several approaches have been identified globally among which is life style modification. To realize expansion of services, there is a yearning need for improving and increase the number of health care practitioners with adequate skills and knowledge for supporting this expansion.
This conference will be expected to raise discussion on ways of optimizing renal services in the era of COVID-19, as well as well addressing human resources challenges. This will be realized with dedicated plenary sessions for paediatric nephrology and renal nursing. The broad theme of this conference is ‘Optimizing renal services in Tanzania in the era of COVID-19’, this broad theme has been supplemented with sub-themes to broaden the discussion and capture solutions in meeting the challenges facing our health system.
