Nephrology Society of Tanzania (NESOT) is keen in improving care of patients with kidney diseases in Tanzania. The theme for the 8th scientific conference is Bridging the gaps and optimising kidney care: Tanzanian perspective.

Tanzania is among countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with a huge burden of no-communicable diseases including kidney diseases. The prevalence of CKD in Tanzania is ranging between 7 and 15% there is limited data on the burden of acute kidney injury and diseases in Tanzania, but there is evolving data to show high burden of this condition.

The challenge now is to improve access of these services by advocating for expansion of services to cover all zones of the country. In line with services for patients with established kidney diseases it is important to improve primary prevention of kidney diseases and several approaches have been identified globally among which is life style modification. To realise expansion of services, there is a yearning need for improving and increase the number of health care practitioners with adequate skills and knowledge for supporting this expansion.

This conference will be expected to raise discussion on ways of optimising renal care, as well as well addressing human resources challenges. This will be realised with dedicated plenary sessions for paediatric nephrology and renal nursing. The broad theme of this conference is ‘Optimising renal services in Tanzania in the era of COVID-19’, this broad theme has been supplemented with sub-themes to broaden the discussion and capture solutions in meeting the challenges facing our health system.
